The Sounds of Sins and Squares

On pages 178/179 of The Fiendish Angletron you see what a square wave and a sin wave look like, but if you want to HEAR them click on the pictures.

The "MIXTURE"... you'll notice that it seems to sound very quiet to start with, but then seems to get louder. This is because the first bit is a sin wave which only has one very basic harmonic i.e. it only has one low pitched tone. However when the square wave starts taking over, this adds a lot of higher harmonics which give the "buzz" and "wow" effects and make it seem louder. At the very end the higher harmonics are filtered out again to finish on a low sin wave which you'll hardly hear. However if you plug your computer through MASSIVE speakers, the low sin wave will wobble you to bits.

Note: the Murderous Maths Organisation takes no responsibility for people that are wobbled to bits by these noises.

The SIN and SQUARE sounds came from these very cool old machines.

You can see the MM author show how they work along with a load of his other noisy stuff at Kjartan's Synths
