The ANSWER to the EXTRA SQUARE Mystery!

Have you had a look at Professor Fiendish's Extra Square Mystery?

If so, here's the answer:

When you try to put the four pieces together, they don't fit exactly. You actually end up with a very long thin diamond gap down the middle. It's exaggerated here so you can see it. The area of this gap is exactly the same as 1 square!
